Iodised salt and urine samples are examined for iodine content. Every Primary Health Centre sends iodised salt samples from its jurisdiction each month. Substandard samples — those containing less than 15.0 ppm iodine — are reported to the concerned authorities. The Deputy Director, State Public Health Laboratory, Pune serves as Secretary of the Planning Committee for this programme. PHCs are directed to send at least 50 samples per month.

Water and urine samples are analysed for fluoride content. The laboratory participates in the surveillance programme and provides guidance and training to concerned authorities.

Under the State Government's 100-day programme, 20 biosafety cabinets have been installed across 20 districts in Maharashtra. Operation theatre swab testing will be extended to all government operation theatres in those districts. Training was scheduled for June 2025.

In April 2025 the State Public Health Laboratory, Pune and the Central/Referral Food Laboratory were assessed for NABL accreditation and awarded accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 under Certificate No. TC-11706, valid until May 2027. The NABL audit for DPHL Nashik is complete and is certified under NABL & FSSAI integrated assessment with Certificate No. TC-17433, valid until January 2028. Accreditation for five further public health laboratories is under way.
